NORTH RACCOON FARM TO RIVER PARTNERSHIP

The North Raccoon Farm to River Partnership is an Iowa Water Quality initiative (WQI) to implement in-field and edge-of-field practices that keep nitrogen and phosphorus out of Iowa waters. This 3-year project started in 2018 and ran to 2020 from a previous grant. ACWA was awarded a new 3-year grant from Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship (IDALS) to continue the project from 2021 to 2024.

Goals include: installation of 15 bioreactors, 15 saturated buffers, 2 targeted wetlands and 11,500 new acres of cover crops. Other aspects of the project include tile and stream water monitoring and collection of in-field data on nitrogen behavior in manure systems.

ACWA leads the project located in five watersheds in the counties of Sac, Calhoun, Carroll and Greene. The Iowa WQI $2.6 million total project includes matching funds to support water quality improvement efforts.

The project goals support the Iowa Nutrient Reduction Strategy recommendations.  The strategy calls for a 45 percent reduction in nitrogen and phosphorus in Iowa’s waters before they enter the Mississippi River.
